Making a Gospel Gift Box

This tool for sharing the gospel.  It's quite visual, and people who've seen it seem to understand the need to make a decision to receive Christ better than any other tool we've tried.  It consists of a homemade box about 2-1/2 inches square that contains two colors of foam inside.  This page explains how to make the box.  The next page explains how to present it.

Let's start with a list of supplies that you can use to make the craft.  You'll probably have to go to a hobby or craft store to get a few of the items, but they are quite inexpensive.

a ruler
a pencil
scissors or a paper cutter
glue stick
red construction paper
green construction paper
gold metallic foil board
1-inch thick white foam (squishy, not styrofoam)
1/8 inch thick black foam (popular with scrapbookers)

If you will be making several boxes, we suggest getting a pack of holiday green construction paper and a pack of holiday red construction paper for about 99 cents per pack rather than the multi-color packs.

Hygloss metallic foil board is available locally at Hobby Lobby in packages for $2.99 (5 sheets gold and 5 sheets silver) see www.hygloss.com for a product info.

One more item that's absolutely essential:  prayer.

Now, start by cutting a piece of green construction paper into a 7-1/2 inch square.

Then with your ruler and pencil,

draw an X from corner to corner like this:

Now, fold one corner to the center of the X and crease the fold:

Unfold the corner again, and fold the corner into the crease you just made:

Continue to fold up toward the center:

And fold one more time:

Your folded edge should meet at the center.
Now unfold the paper and do the same for another corner.
Do the same for all the corners.
Now unfold the paper.

Your creases should look like this:

Use a scissors to cut four slits.

Turn the slits horizontal and start to fold up from the bottom.

Again

and fold the small points in.

Do the same for the other side.

Fold the two sides up and fold the tabs in to form a box.  This is the hardest part to illustrate.  For a better picture, see kid-at-art's page on the Origami Box.

Fold back the triangle on the crease and glue it.

This is what it looks like when it's done.

Now cut a 7-inch square out of red paper and fold it the same way.  This square must be smaller than the green square so that it will fit inside when you are done.

Now turn the paper over so it poofs up.

Then cut four rectangles out of the gold paper 1-3/16" by 2-3/8" and glue them in the first rectangle next to the corners.

After the glue starts to set, turn the paper back over and start to fold it up again.

Do the same from the opposite side.

Fold back the triangle on the crease and glue it.

Then cut a square of gold paper 2-3/8" on each side and glue it in the bottom.

Cut a 2-1/4 inch square black foam and put it in the green half of the box top.  Then cut a 2-1/8 inch square of  white foam and put it in the red box bottom.  The white foam should fall out of the red and gold box bottom easily when you turn it upside down.

Then put the green top over the red box bottom.

Now you are ready to tell the story.  Continue to the script.
